CDR Jim Simpson
CDR James Michael Simpson is a Program Management Officer in the Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories, Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Food and Drug Administration located in Silver Spring, Maryland.
CDR Simpson serves as a project manager on several projects supporting over 200 scientists and engineers. One of his most critical roles is that of the project coordinator for the Office’s Science Prioritization Process (SPP). This continuous improvement program is the annual evaluation of 75 plus research projects for their technical, public health and regulatory effectiveness in meeting Center’s mission.
CDR Simpson graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1985. He earned his Master in Quality Systems Management from the National Graduate School in 2005. He also received a Masters Certificate in Project Management from George Washington University in 2006. Through the American Society for Quality (ASQ), he is a certified Quality Engineer, Quality Auditor and Quality Manager. Through the Project Management Institute (PMI), he also is a certified Project Management Professional.
CDR Simpson has been a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service for 21 plus years serving in five different program assignments. He is a voting member of the Engineering Professional Advisory Committee and coordinated the 2008 PHS Leadership Development Seminar. He is the Chief of the Logistics Section for the Rapid Deployment Force PHS-1 and has been deployed on numerous occasions including the Terrorist Response to the World Trade Center, FEMA’s Headquarters and Hurricanes Rita and Ike. He has received many PHS awards including two PHS Achievement Medals, three PHS Citations, 2 Outstanding Unit Citation and eleven Unit Commendations. His non-PHS awards include Vice President Gore’s Hammer Award, the Community Service Plaque from FDA\CDRH, and the Technology Advancement Plaque from the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME), Washington, DC Post.
CDR Simpson served for two years as a National Vice President and Chair of the SAME Readiness Committee. For the past five years, he has also served the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States (AMSUS) with their annual awards dinner.
CDR Simpson and his wife, Bridget, have two sons, one daughter and reside in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
