Special Advisor to Dr. Hamburg Dr. Murray Lumpkin Retires

February 11, 2014

On January 11, 2014, Dr. Murray Lumpkin, Special Advisor to Dr. Hamburg, retired from FDA after a little more than 24 years of service at FDA. He recently served as deputy commissioner for International and Special Programs. In his farewell message, Dr. Lumpkin stated that his time at FDA was “a wonderfully fulfilling professional and personal experience at one of the world’s great institutions.” He continued to say that he strongly believes “that regulatory authorities are premier platforms for significant engagements related to medical products and food safety and their impact on public health and on the lives of patients and those caring for them. Knowing that each day you get to be a part of such meaningful work with teams of dedicated, bright, passionate people, both at FDA and around the world, whose actions are influencing global public health, is both humbling and rewarding…”

Dr. Lumpkin is now leading the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s strategic initiatives around global regulatory systems, including working with partners such as the World Health Organization and other multinational organizations, regional regulatory harmonization/alignment initiatives, and national and regional medical products regulatory authorities. These initiatives are focused on making regulatory systems and processes more efficient and effective to help get medical products sooner to patients who need them in low- and middle-income countries, without sacrificing product quality and safety.
